Researcher ObservationThese observations connected with the concept of Plato's ‘tether’, asstudents were being encouraged to tie their experiential knowledgeand feelings (true beliefs) to theory through reflection, thus legitimisingthem within an educational culture traditionally dominated bypropositional knowledge. Teachers also acknowledged reflection asan academic skill, suggesting that educationalists valued the affectiveand practical side of knowing as well as the propositional. Thisresonated with Schon's (1987) critique of technical rationality, wherehe was not suggesting that propositional knowing should be discardedby professionals, but rather should be embellished by different ways ofknowing.
