the divine comedy of dante alighieri (1265 - 1321) is regarded as the greatest literary work in the italian language (completed 1321) and masterpiece of world literature. the opus describes the journey of the poet through hell and purgatory, heaven, and on a deeper level, the symbolic way of the soul to god.
in his last years with the poet and painter william blake (1757 - 1827) 102 illustrations to dante's epic poem, the bleistiftskizzen to finished watercolours. blake manages the visionary force of dante's language to translate into images and in all its range to display: from the torments of hell to the happiness of paradiseof cruel mutilations of the damned and the divine beauty of the redeemed. although blake remained true to the text of dante, he brought his own approach to key issues of the work.
