Die 1918 in Duisburg geborene Dorothea Steigerwald ist die vielleicht bekannteste Künstlerin der Kirche im deutschsprachigen Raum.

Nach ihrem Eintritt in das Diakonissen-Mutterhaus „Hebron“ begann Schwester Dorothea neben ihrer Arbeit als Kindergärtnerin und Krankenpflegerin autodidaktisch mit der Bildhauerei. 1963 entstand die in der ganzen christlichen Welt bekannte Plastik „Bleib sein Kind“. 1980 wurde Dorothea Steigerwald nach über 40jähriger Tätigkeit vom Dienst im Kindergarten freigestellt. Seitdem widmet sie sich ganz ihrem künstlerischen Auftrag.

Postkarten und Kalender mit Abbildungen ihrer Werke erreichen Millionenauflagen und sind in Gemeindehäusern und christlichen Wohnzimmern in aller Welt zuhause. Unsere Geborgenheit in Gottes Händen ist ihr Hauptthema: „Ich will den Menschen ganz einfach sagen, daß da einer ist, der sie liebt“.

Für ihr selbstloses Schaffen und ihren Einsatz für Kinder wurde Dorothea Steigerwald im Jahr 1989 das Bundesverdienstkreuz verliehen. Trotz ihres Erfolges ist sie immer bescheiden geblieben: „Das ist nicht mein Verdienst, dass ich das kann, sondern ein Geschenk.“
