2.5.2. Blood biochemistry and haematology assayThe animals in 2.5.1 were fasted overnight to minimize the fluctuation in theparameters measured. Blood samples were taken from the eyeball veniplex and stabilizedby heparin. Following biochemical parameters were measured: urea (BUN),alanine aminotransferase (ALT), sodium, potassium, cholesterol, protein, albumin, creatinine and glucose. All analyses on blood plasma were performed on an RA-1000 autoanalyzer (Technicon, Tarrytown, NY, USA).Blood samples for haematology characteristics were stabilized by using EDTA.The following characteristics were assessed using a HEMAVET 950FS (Drew Scientific,USA): white blood cells (WBC), erythrocyte count (RBC), haemoglobin concentration(HC), hematocrit (HCT), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin(MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and platelet count (PLT).The differential count distinguishes neutrophils (N), lymphocytes (L), monocytes(M), eosinophils (E) and basophils (B).
