ศรษฐกิจไทยในทศวรรษ 2500 และ 2510 เกิดจากการส่งออกสินค้าเกษตร และการไหลเข้าของเงินทุน-เงินช่วยเหลือจากต่างประเทศ ส่วนภาคอุตสาหกรรมในช่วงแรกยังเน้นการผลิตเพื่อทดแทนการนำเข้าเป็นหลัก ซึ่งช่วงหลังของทศวรรษที่ 2510 จึงเริ่มเปลี่ยนทิศทางมาเป็นการผลิตเพื่อส่งออก (โดยเฉพาะหลังแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ฉบับที่ 3 พ.ศ. 2514 เป็นต้นมา) แต่ก็ยังไม่เห็นผลชัดเจนนัก
