why
It seems that the “why?” of a learning objective is as important as the content.
The “why?” is the gateway to the student. It’s the door through which adult
education occurs. If anyone thinks that children will drive an adult to dis-
traction by asking “why,” he or she has never taught adult learners.
Ifl tell basic trainees that they have to have a grip high on the backstrap
of the handgun, we’ll spend a considerable amount of time going student to
student fixing their low grips on handguns. Telling seldom seems to get it
across. We can tell and show and do it again, but 30-50% of a basic class will
need on-the-line remediation.
