I agree with so much of what Amy says here.
At our school, which has gone through nothing but change over the last eight years, one important step our former principal took was to have us individually identify the kinds of action behaviors we felt comfortable and competent in. Some of us are big picture planners, others love to obsess about nitty gritty detail. Others like to foresee obstacles and others again need to consider the effects of change on various stakeholders. By valuing the different traits and the way they could contribute during periods of change and upheaval, people felt more respected.

The good leaders have a common trait of communicating well, involving ALL (from the ground up) in the decision making process to create buy-in and then listening and responding to needs and concerns as the change is put into place and negotiated.
