In De man van veel kruipt de schrijfster in het hoofd van Anton de Kom. Hoewel het geen ik-verhaal is, ligt de focalisatie permanent bij de hoofdpersoon van het verhaal. We blijven dicht bij zijn gevoelsleven en zien de werkelijkheid zoals Anton de Kom hem beleefde. In de aanloop naar zijn opname raakt Anton de Kom bevangen door wantrouwen en achtervolgingswanen en verliest hij de grip op zijn bestaan.

Wanneer hij aan het einde van de dag naar huis liep, kwamen de gruwelen met hem mee. Natuurlijk is het verhaal fictie; de schrijfster heeft van de historische figuur Anton de Kom een romanpersonage gemaakt. Wat Anton de Kom precies gedacht heeft en hoe hij zijn opname in de psychiatrische instelling écht heeft ervaren, weten we niet. Dat vind ik niet vervelend. Voor mij is het belangrijk dat het verhaal geloofwaardig is en dat de emoties invoelbaar zijn. En dat is Amatmoekrim goed gelukt. En toch roept De man van veel vragen op: werd Anton de Kom werkelijk door de geheime dienst in de gaten gehouden of was hij psychotisch? Of verloor hij de controle over zichzelf ómdat hij door de overheid tegengewerkt werd?

Karin Amatmoekrim heeft een knap boek geschreven: voor wie deze bijzondere persoon vol idealen niet kent, is deze roman een prachtige eerste kennismaking. Voor Surinamers, die ongetwijfeld weten wie Anton de Kom was, is De man van veel ook lezenswaardig. De schrijfster brengt hem als romanpersonage opnieuw tot leven en laat hem in zijn kwetsbaarheid zien. Het levert een ontroerend verhaal op!
