Volkssprookjes: mondelinge en schriftelijke overlevering
Van volkssprookjes is lang gedacht dat ze eerst eeuwenlang zijn doorverteld en daarna pas zijn vastgelegd, letterlijk en figuurlijk.
Maar de realiteit is veel complexer. Er blijkt een dynamische uitwisseling te zijn geweest tussen mondelinge en schriftelijke bronnen. Soms maakte een sprookje eerst deel uit van de orale traditie, werd dan opgeschreven, vervolgens gelezen en voorgelezen en werd dan weer doorverteld om vervolgens nogmaals te worden vastgelegd op papier.

Het is dan ook goed te begrijpen dat er vaak meerdere versies in omloop waren van een en hetzelfde sprookje. Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is het sprookje van Roodkapje. Perrault heeft een versie van Roodkapje, maar de gebroeders Grimm hadden er ook een. En die twee versies verschillen essentieel van elkaar en op meerdere punten. Zo wordt Roodkapje bij Perrault niet gered uit de buik van de wolf maar bij de Grimms wel.
