Als Baumeister des Königs Djoser zur Zeit der 3. Dynastie war Imhotep für die Errichtung der Stufenpyramide dieses Königs in Sakkara verantwortlich, des ersten Steinbaus der Menschheitsgeschichte. Tempelreliefs und Inschriften beweisen die kultische Verehrung des Imhotep, dessen göttlicher Status sich auch dem Beinamen "Sohn des Ptah" widerspiegelt. Als Stifter gibt die Inschrift einen Beamten mit dem geläufigen Namen Psametich an.
