แรงบัดดาลใจจาก บรมพุทโธ มรดกโลกที่อินโดนีเซีย ทำให้หลวงปู่ศรี พระเกจิชื่อดังแห่งภาคอีสาน ได้สร้าง แบบจำลองความยิ่งใหญ่นี้ ไว้ที่วัดป่ากุง ร้อยเอ็ด โดยบรรดาศิษยานุศิษย์ ร่วมกัน ก่อสร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์ครบรอบ 90 ปี พรรษา 60 พระเทพวิสุทธิมงคล "หลวงปู่ศรี มหาวีโร" จำลองแบบจากเจดีย์โบโรบูโด(บรมพุทโธ) ที่เกาะชวา อินโดนีเซีย ...เห็นแล้วงามจริง

ที่มาของการก่อสร้างเจดีย์หิน คราวเมื่อพระเดชพระคุณหลวงปู่ศรี มหาวีโร ได้ไปปฏิบัติศาสนกิจ จำพรรษาที่ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย เมื่อ พ.ศ.2531 ได้ไปนมัสการเจดีย์โบโรโดร์(บรมพุทโธ) ที่เกาะชวาอินโดนีเซีย ได้เห็นความใหญ่โตมโหฬารงดงาม

หลวงปู่เกิดความประทับใจมาก เมื่อกลับมาเมืองไทยก็ได้นำเรื่องราวที่ได้ไปพบ มาเล่าให้ศิษยานุศิษย์ฟัง และดำริว่าจะสร้างไว้ที่เมืองไทย ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ.2535 หลวงปู่ได้สั่งให้พระอาจารย์มานะอตุโลนำพระอาจารย์ศักดิ์ชัย อภิวัฒโน และนายอนุวัตร บูรณะกร(เป็ด) เดินทางไปดูรูปแบบเจดีย์โบโรโดร์(บรมพุทโธ) สถาปัตยกรรมชั้นนำ 1 ใน 7 ของโลก

การเดินทาง
สำหรับเจดีย์หินนี้ ตั้งอยู่ที่วัดป่ากุง อยู่ห่างจาก ตัวเมืองร้อยเอ็ดไปตามถนนสายร้อยเอ็ด-วาปีปทุม 20 กิโลเมตร เส้นทางจากตัวเมืองร้อยเอ็ด ตรงมาทางที่จะไปวาปีปทุม ประมาณ 7 -8 กม. เลยสถานีใบยาไทรงาม 2 (ขวามือ) จะมีทางเข้าไป ประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร
