En philosophie, Kant pense le temps comme forme a priori de la sensibilité, c'est-à-dire comme cadre universel, nécessaire pour toute perception humaine, permettant d'ordonner la diversité du monde. Mais le temps n'existe ni dans les choses ni à la manière d'une chose. Il n'a pas d'objectivité, n'étant que la forme d'un sens interne. La critique kantienne pense ainsi un temps qui n'existe que par et pour le sujet : nous ne pouvons percevoir que dans le temps mais le temps n'est pas en soi, il est seulement une condition subjective de la perception des phénomènes. Chez Kant, il s'agit alors de la subjectivité de la raison.
