1. ความเป็นมา
1.1 แนวคิดโครงการเส้นทางรถไฟสายเอเชีย เริ่มมีขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2503 โดย องค์การ
สหประชาชาติ (ESCAP) ได้ส ารวจและพิจารณาให้เป็นเส้นทางเชื่อมระหว่างทวีปเอเชียและยุโรป จากเมือง
อิสตันบูล ในประเทศตุรกี ผ่านอิหร่าน ปากีสถาน อินเดีย บังกลาเทศ พม่า ไทย มาเลเซีย และสิ้นสุดที่ประเทศ
สิงคโปร์ รวมระยะทางประมาณ 14,000 กิโลเมตร เส้นทางนี้มีเส้นทางช่วงขาด (Missing Link) อยู่ในหลาย

แนวเส้นทางใหม่เป็นเส้นทางด้านเหนือผ่านรัสเซีย เลียบชายฝั่งทะเลด้านตะวันออกของจีน ผ่านพม่าหรือลาวหรือ
เวียดนาม กัมพูชา ไทย มาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ และข้ามเรือไปถึงอินโดนีเซีย โดย ESCAP ได้ศึกษารายละเอียดของ
เส้นทางแล้วเสร็จเมื่อต้นปี 2539

กัวลาลัมเปอร์-กรุงเทพฯ-อรัญประเทศ-ปอยเปต-ศรีโสภณ-พนมเปญ-Loc Ninh-โฮจิมินห์-ฮานอย-Lao CaiHekou-คุนหมิง
โดยรวมทางเชื่อมต่อจากเวียงจันทน์-ท่าแขก-Vung Anh และทางเชื่อมต่อจากกรุงเทพฯ–
น้ าตก-ด่านเจดีย์สามองค์-ธันบูซายัต-ย่างกุ้ง เนื่องจากเส้นทางที่ 1 เป็นเส้นทางที่มีเส้นทางช่วงขาดสั้นที่สุด
และผ่านเมืองหลวงมากที่สุด รวมทั้งมีผลตอบแทนสูงสุดเมื่อเทียบกับเส้นทางอื่นๆ ทั้งนี้ โครงข่ายเส้นทาง
ดังกล่าวมีเส้นทางช่วงขาดและทางเชื่อมต่อระยะทางประมาณ 1,271 กิโลเมตร อยู่ในประเทศไทย กัมพูชา
เวียดนาม ลาว และพม่า
