Immer wieder hat Gerd Schmid-Villamor in den letzten Jahrzehnten den Orient bereist und mehrfach hat er in Ägypten, Tunesien und Marokko gelebt und gearbeitet. Seine Faszination für diese Länder begleitet ihn seit Kindheitstagen. Als Künstler begeistern ihn das unvergleichliche orientalische Licht, das flirrende Sonnengelb der Landschaften und die scharfen Schatten in den Basars und Gassen.

Mit seinen Aquarellen und Ölbildern steht Schmid-Villamor in einer langen Tradition der Orientmalerei, die von Slevogt über Klee und Macke bis hin zu Kandinsky reicht.
