Physically, a bus can consist of tiny wires etched in silicon on a single chip, a cablethat contains multiple wires, or a set of parallel metal wires on a circuit board. Most computers use the third form: a bus is implemented as a set of parallel wires onthe computer’s main circuit board, which is known as a mother board. In addition to abus, the mother board contains the processor, memory, and other functional units.A set of sockets on the mother board connects to the bus to allow devices to beplugged in or removed easily. Typically, the bus and the sockets are positioned near theedge of the mother board to make them easily accessible from outside. Figure 14.2 illustratesa bus and sockets on a mother board.
