วอลเลย์บอลได้แพร่หลายเข้ามาใน ไทย ตั้งแต่เมื่อใดไม่มีหลักฐานยืนยันแน่ชัด เพียงแต่ทราบกันว่าในระยะแรกๆ เป็นที่นิยมเล่นกันในหมู่ชาวจีนและชาวญวนมาก จนกระทั่งมีการแข่งขันระหว่างคณะ ชุมชน สโมสร และสมาคมขึ้น บางครั้งติดต่อแข่งขันกันไปในภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และมีการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยทองคำทางภาคใต้
ปี พ.ศ. 2477 กรมพลศึกษาได้จัดพิมพ์กติกาวอลเลย์บอลขึ้น โดยอาจารย์นพคุณ พงษ์สุวรรณ เป็นผู้แปล และท่านเป็น ผู้เชี่ยวชาญในกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลเป็นอย่างยิ่ง จึงได้รับเชิญเป็นผู้บรรยายเกี่ยวกับเทคนิควิธีการเล่น ตลอดจนกติกาการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอล แก่บรรดาครูพลศึกษาทั่วประเทศในโอกาสที่กระทรวงศึกษาได้เปิดอบรมขึ้น ใน ปีนี้เองกรมพลศึกษาได้จัดให้มีการแข่งขันกีฬาประจำปีขึ้น และบรรจุกีฬาวอลเลย์บอลหญิงเข้าไว้ในรายการแข่งขันเป็นครั้งแรก พร้อมทั้งในหลักสูตรของโรงเรียนพลศึกษากลางได้กำหนดวิชาบังคับให้นักเรียน หญิงเรียนวิชาวอลเลย์บอลและเนตบอล สมัยนั้นมี น.อ.หลวงสุภชลาศัย ร.น. ดำรงตำแหน่งอธิบดีกรมพลศึกษา
จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2500 ได้มีการจัดตั้ง " สมาคมวอลเลย์บอลสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย " (Amature Volleyball Association of Thailand) โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสนับสนุนและเผยแพร่กีฬาวอลเลย์บอลให้เจริญรุดหน้า และดำเนินการจัดการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอลในระบบ 6 คน มีหน่วยราชการอื่นๆ จัดการแข่งขันประจำปี เช่น กรมพลศึกษา กรมการคณะกรรมการกีฬามหาวิทยาลัย เทศบาลนครกรุงเทพฯ สภากีฬาทหาร ตลอดจนการแข่งขันกีฬาเขตแห่งประเทศไทย ได้มีการจัดแข่งขันทั้งประเภททีมชาย
