อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย ครอบคลุมพื้นที่โบราณสถานกรุงสุโขทัย ศูนย์กลางการปกครองของอาณาจักรสุโขทัยซึ่งมีอำนาจอยู่บริเวณภาคเหนือตอนล่างของประเทศไทยในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18-19 ตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลเมืองเก่า (เขตเทศบาลตำบลเมืองเก่า) อำเภอเมืองสุโขทัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย ห่างจากตัวเมืองสุโขทัยปัจจุบัน (เขตเทศบาลเมืองสุโขทัยธานี) ไปทางทิศตะวันตกประมาณ 12 กิโลเมตร ตามทางหลวงแผ่นดินหมายเลข 12 (ถนนจรดวิถีถ่อง)

ผังเมืองสุโขทัยมีลักษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า มีความยาวประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร กว้างประมาณ 1.6 กิโลเมตร มีประตูเมืองอยู่ตรงกลางกำแพงเมืองแต่ละด้าน ภายในยังเหลือร่องรอยพระราชวังและวัดอีก 26 แห่ง วัดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดคือวัดมหาธาตุ อุทยานแห่งนี้ได้รับการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์โดยกรมศิลปากรด้วยความช่วยเหลือจากองค์การยูเนสโก มีผู้เยี่ยมชมหลายแสนคนต่อปี ซึ่งสามารถเดินเท้าหรือขี่จักรยานเที่ยวชมได้
