ราชวงศ์สุโขทัยมีประวัติปรากฏในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 2 (จารึกวัดศรีชุม) ใจความว่า ผู้ตั้งราชวงศ์มี 2 คน ด้วยกัน คือ พ่อขุนผาเมือง และพ่อขุนบางกลางหาว ได้ช่วยกันตั้งราชวงศ์ขึ้นเมื่อพ.ศ. 1800 พ่อขุนผาเมืองเป็นลูกพ่อขุนศรีนาวนำถม ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าเมืองสุโขทัยในครั้งนั้นเมืองสุโขทัยยังเป็นเมืองประเทศราชของขอมอยู่
