There is no established age when a teen will become sexually active. In a recent discussion with
adolescents held in May 2010, at the University of Belize, students from the Toledo community
college stated that there should not be a set age for teens to get involved in a relationship, and
that intercourse will happen when, according to the females perspective, they are ready.
The onset of puberty often causes an increase in hormonal activity which sometimes may lead to
an individual to vent their desires in discovering their own sexual identity. Attractions during the
early stage of adolescence are not reserved only for the opposite sex. The effects of hormones,
and the sense of rebellion in an individual coupled with the idea of freedom, or lack of it may
often propel an individual into experimenting. Little consideration is given to possible
consequences of coitus apart from the want of instant gratification. Even though teenagers may
be sensitized about sexually transmitted disease and possibility of pregnancy, rebellion often
catalyzes the individual into having intercourse as a form of defiance. It is little wonder that
teens that experiment at an early age increases their chances of becoming pregnant especially
since at this age, teens are not well versed with the use of contraceptives.
