齋戒月（Ramadan）的意義，是讓穆斯林真正感受到挨餓者的痛苦並產生惻隱之心，以達到精神上的自我淨化，同時培養吃苦耐勞的精神。齋戒是伊斯蘭教五功之一，五功即唸、禮、齋、課與朝。
長達一個月的齋戒月，是穆斯林一年當中最神聖的時刻，馬來同胞在日出後與日落前禁食、禁飲，同時學習耐心、容忍、謙卑和仁慈。“在甘榜，你會看到許多穆斯林發放免費食物給貧困者，比如粥、飯。伊斯蘭教鼓勵我們在齋戒月期間施舍，因為這期間做的善事會帶來很大的回報。
