We conducted two studies exploring the suitability of fullbodymotion control for older adults. In our first study, weevaluated how well elderly participants could perform a setof gestures that was developed in collaboration with aphysical therapist. Results suggest limitations in traditionalgesture movements, and based on our findings in study one,we designed a game for institutionalized elderly usinggestures for full-body motion control. In a second study weinvestigated how participants responded to the gestures inour game. Results from study two showed the success ofour gestures, and demonstrated the positive effect ofplaying our game on participant mood. Our work makesthree primary contributions: 1) We created a set of gesturessuitable for institutionalized older adults in a gamingcontext, considering their range of motion, agility andstrength; 2) We presented a full-body motion-controlledgame for older adults and demonstrated that such gamescan have a positive effect on older adults’ moods;influencing their well-being and providing enjoyable leisureactivities; and 3) We present design guidelines for full-bodymotion controls to accommodate the range of abilitiesamong institutionalized older adults. Additionally, wediscuss how our findings and guidelines generalize beyondthe scope of camera-based full-body motion-control games.
