Nachdem er eine klassische Akademieausbildung absolviert hatte, ging Rosmalen in die USA und begann Ende der 70er Jahre in Los Angeles als Maler zu arbeiten. Wieder in die Niederlande zurückgekehrt studierte Ed van Rosmalen Stadtplanung. Nach seinem Abschluss nahm er eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität von Amsterdam an.
