Portrait of Emil Nolde Emil Nolde (born Hans Emil Hansen, until he named after his birthplace in 1902) is considered to be one of the most important German Expressionists. Rejected by the Munich Academy, he went to Paris to continue his studies at the local Académie Julien. Since 1905, lived and worked on the Danish island of ALS and in Berlin and was member of the "bridge" and - as in the short term - the Berliner secession.
