Response. Response in an assessment situation is what the stu- dent is expected to produce; it can vary greatly, depending on the knowledge that is required, the form of the response, and whether the response is to be made by an individual or a group. The response required is related to, but not entirely de- pendent upon, the situation. A test item can require the student to choose the correct answer among given options, or to produce the answer on an open-response item. The appropriate- ness of a particular form of response depends on the purpose of the assessment and other factors such as the time available for scoring and the number of students being tested.
