At first glance, there aren’t a whole lot of differences between the two charts—the wins and losses are grouped together similarly and the key is off to the side.
The colors are similar and both are the standard colors that each program produces. In Lumira, there was no obvious way to change these colors, but in Tableau changing the colors would have been simple. If I wanted to decorate the bars in WSU’s “Crimson and Gray” I could have done that easily.
Finally, the one thing that bothered me about Lumira’s visualization is the placement of the data labels. Having them inside the bars makes them difficult to see. Tableau’s placement on top of the bars is both logical and aesthetically pleasing.
As for the data, the variable seemed to change most between wins and losses was opponent strength. Opponent strength is the ranking given to a team by kenpom.com. Since WSU’s offense has been particularly awful this season, I decided to plot the Cougars' offensive efficiency (points scored per possession) against opponent strength.
