Fisheries management aims to improve the benefits that society receives from harvesting fish. Because fishing depends on a natural resource (fish) that has a productivity limited by the environment in which the fish live, it is fundamental to ensure the continued productivity of the resources through sustainable use. This goal, coupled with other goals that promote a healthy marine environment for the fish and improving the well-being of the people that depend on fish for their livelihoods and employment, as well as those who benefit from consuming fish, forms the basis of sustainable fisheries management. Fisheries management includes the activities of (i) information gathering, (ii) analysis, (iii) planning, (iv) consultation, (v) decision-making, (vi) allocation of resources and (vii) formulation and implementation, with enforcement, as necessary, of regulations or rules which govern fisheries activities
