2.4. Soil moisture measurement
Using the gravimetric sampling method, the soil moisture content
was calculated. The plot soil samples were taken immediately
before irrigation. The soil samples of the root zone were taken at
random by using small auger at depth of 10, 20 and 30 cm. Six soil
samples of at least two similar treated plots were taken to get the
mean soil moisture content. Field soil samples of 50–100 g were
taken in small labelled polyethylene bags to the laboratory where
they were weighed by sensitive balance to get the field soil weight,
and then placed into an oven at 105 ◦C for 24 h for complete drying.
The soil moisture content was calculated as a percentage in
oven-dry soil weight base as follows:
