1. An overview of cash distributions:
After FCF becomes positive, how should a company use it?
Pay interest expenses.
Pay down the principal on debt
Pay dividends
Repurchase stock
Buy nonoperating assets (Treasury bills or marketable securities)
A company’s investment opportunities and operating plans determine its level of FCF.
A company’s capital structure policy determines the amount of debt and interest payments.
Working capital policy determines the investment in marketable securities.
The remaining FCF should be distributed to shareholders: dividends and/or stock repurchases.
