With linguistically able pupils, who learn without great effort, reproduction need not be carried on for long; but for the slow ones and for children who have had little experience of writing, reproduction should be continued for some time, though, of course, not as the only exercise. If pupils become careless and show no interest in doing it well, it might be given up; though. As it is so useful, the better plan would be to devise ways of making it worthwhile. For instance, the class could copy down conversations, verses or short passages that will be studied a little later on, or that can be used for another kind of exercise. Question could be copied down that later will be answered, and the beginning of short stories that later will be completed.
