Nach Jahren unsteter Aufenthalte in den europäischen und russischen Metropolen fand Wassily Kandinsky in Murnau, einem kleinen Ort der Voralpenlandschaft, seine Ruhe und Beharrlichkeit wieder. Hier ließ er sich mit seiner Partnerin, der Münchner Malerin Gabriele Münter, nieder, die ihn von nun an in den entscheidenden Jahren des Durchbruchs mit Zustimmung und Kritik begleitete.

Kandinskys Bilder dieser Murnauer Phase bauen sich meist aus großen massiven Blöcken von leuchtenden, in Tupfen aufgebrachten Farben auf, die sich in starken Hell-Dunkel- und Kalt- Warm-Kontrasten gegenüberstehen. Oft wechseln sich auch gleichmäßiger angelegte Tupfen und Kleckse ab, was den Bildern eine unruhige, flackernde und grelle Farbigkeit verleiht - das gegenständliche Thema verschwindet fast unter der aufblühenden Farbenflut.
