5. ConclusionThe findings of this Bolivian case study revealed a risk associatedwith the consumption of tomatoes, particularly for children. This riskwas associated with the organophosphate residues while there was norisk linked to the detected organochlorines. The risk could be reducedby approximately 50% by washing the tomatoes and by approximately70% by peeling the tomatoes. To reduce the dietary risk of pesticideresidues in Bolivia, there is an urgent need of farmer education and introductionof less hazardous pesticides as well as resources for surveillanceand enforcement of legislation in order to ensure public health.Supplementary data to this article can be found online
