ตามบทบาทและหน้าที่ของทางด่านศุลกากร ในการปฏิบัติพิธีการศุลกากร การจัดเก็บภาษีและรายได้สำหรับสินค้านำเข้าและส่งออก และของติดตัวผู้โดยสาร การคืนอากร รวมทั้งการควบคุมและตรวจสอบสินค้านำเข้าและส่งออก สินค้าถ่ายลำ สินค้าผ่านแดน และของติดตัวผู้โดยสารตามกฎหมายว่าด้วยศุลกากรและกฎหมายอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง สืบสวนและปราบปรามการกระทำความผิดตามกฎหมายศุลกากร ดำเนินการเกี่ยวกับคดีทางศุลกากร ของกลางและของตกค้างที่อยู่ในความรับผิดชอบ ประสานงาน ให้ความร่วมมือ และแนะนำในการอำนวยความสะดวกด้านการค้าชายแดน และการปฏิบัติงานร่วมกับหรือสนับสนุนการปฏิบัติงานของหน่วยงานอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง หรือที่ได้รับมอบหมาย
ด่านศุลกากรในพื้นที่ ที่มีจำนวน 9 ด่านด้วยกันคือ ด่านศุลกากรแม่สาย ด่านศุลกากรเชียงแสน ด่านศุลกากรเชียงของ ด่านศุลกากรแม่ฮ่องสอน ด่านศุลกากรแม่สะเรียง ด่านศุลกากรท่าอากาศยานเชียงใหม่ ด่านศุลกากรเชียงดาว ด่านศุลกากรทุ่งช้าง และด่านศุลกากรแม่สอดซึ่งมีพรหมแดนของด่านติดต่อกับทางฝั่งของประเทศลาว และประเทศพม่า
ข้อมูลการค้าชายแดน (การนำเข้า) ไทย – พม่า ของด่านศุลกากรในพื้นที่สำนักงานศุลกากรภาคที่ 3 เปรียบเทียบปีงบประมาณ 2559 (ต.ค. 2558 – ก.ค. 2559) และปีงบประมาณ 2558 (ต.ค. 2557 – ก.ค. 2558) การนำเข้าส่งออกของด่านทุกด่านนั้นเป็นข้อมูลของการนำเข้าส่งออกกับประเทศเมียนมาเท่านั้นแต่แท้จริงแล้วมีการนำเข้าส่งออกกับประเทศอื่นๆอีกหลายประการ แต่ในครั้งนี้มุ่งเสนอข้อมูลการนำเข้าส่งออกสินค้าระหว่างพรหมแดนไทยและเมียนมา เท่านั้น อันดับที่ 1 ด่านศุลกากรแม่สอด อันดับที่ 2 ด่านศุลกากรแม่สะเรียง และในอันดับที่ 3 ด่านศุลกากรแม่สาย สินค้าทางการเกษตรเป็นส่วนมากที่ได้เข้าออกในด่านอำเภอแม่สาย ซึ่งมีความหวังที่อยากให้มีการนำเข้าส่งออกที่ด่านกิ่วผาวอกด้วยเช่นกัน
