В своем великом сочинении, называющемся «Полития» или «Государство», Платон высказывает свои политические воззрения, рисуя картину совершенно правильного идеального государства и идеал настоящего человека. Создание такого государства так же невозможно, как и осуществление всех других идеалов, потому что устройство действительного государства зависит от национальных свойств, географических условий и других обстоятельств, не принятых в соображение в идеальном создании философа, который сам признает свою мысль неосуществимою до тех пор, пока люди совершенно не переродятся. Государство Платона, подобно идеальным представлениям всех остальных человеческих отношений, так далеко от действительности, что выражение «республика Платона» до сих пор употребляется для обозначения фантастической мечты. Платон имел только в виду представить истинные понятия о справедливости и указать характеристические свойства истинного правителя: и действительно, изучение образца такого государства и таких общественных условий естественно должно вести к уяснению понятий об этих предметах.
