สิ่งที่โดดเด่นที่สุดและเป็นสัญลักษณ์บ่งบอกว่าท่านได้มาถึงพิพิธภัณฑ์แล้วก็คือ ประติมากรรมช้างสามเศียรหรือช้างเอราวัณที่ตั้งตระหง่านอยู่บนอาคารทรงกลม สามารถมองเห็นได้จากระยะไกล ช้างเอราวัณนี้เป็นประติมากรรมลอยตัวด้วยวิธีเคาะมือแห่งแรกและใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก ทำจากโลหะทองแดงนับแสนชิ้น มีขนาดใหญ่โตมโหฬารจนต้องตะลึง โดยส่วนหัวมีน้ำหนักถึง 100 ตัน และลำตัวมีน้ำหนักถึง 150 ตัน ตัวช้างรวมอาคารมีความสูงทั้งสิ้น 43.60 เมตร หรือสูงเท่ากับตึก 14 ชั้นเลยทีเดียว
อาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ช้างเอราวัณ แบ่งพื้นที่การจัดแสดงออกเป็น 3 ส่วนคือ ชั้นล่างสุด มีชื่อว่า ชั้นสุวรรณภูมิ เป็นส่วนของการจัดแสดงความเป็นมาของพิพิธภัณฑ์ และจัดเก็บโบราณวัตถุจำนวนมาก ชั้นที่อยู่กึ่งกลาง มีชื่อว่า ชั้นโลก เป็นอาคารทรงโดม ประดุจเข้าพระสุเมรุ ภายในจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุ และงานฝีมือช่างที่วิจิตรงดงาม เพดานเป็นกระจกสี มีรูปแผนที่โบราณ ดูสวยงามในสไตล์ตะวันตก ชั้นบนสุด มีชื่อว่า ชั้นจักรวาล เป็นส่วนที่อยู่ภายในท้องช้าง ชั้นนี้เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ และพระพุทธรูปเก่าแก่ในยุคสมัยต่างๆ บนเพดานมีภาพเขียนสีฝุ่นที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับระบบสุริยจักรวาล
