Signs and Symptoms/Clinical Presentation
› Primary syphilis: Painless and ulcerated chancre with regionalized lymphadenopathy
› Secondary syphilis: Maculopapular rash on the trunk, extremities, soles, or palms. Other signs include annular lesions,
alterations of pigmentation, alopecia, mucous patches on the oral or genital mucosa, condylomalata lesions (i.e., large,
raised, whitish-gray lesions found on warm moist areas of the body or areas of friction), fever, malaise, nausea, headache,
constipation, anorexia, generalized lymphadenopathy, and muscle, joint, and bone pain
› Symptoms of latent syphilis depend on the area affected: Cardiovascular syphilis can manifest as aortitis, aortic
regurgitation, or aneurysm. Neurosyphilis can manifest as meningeal syphilis, parenchymatous neurosyphilis, or gummatous
syphilis, which is characterized by gummas (i.e., ulcerative, nodular lesions) involving the skin, mucous membranes, and
skeleton. Other signs of latent syphilis include choroidoretinitis, iritis, and leukoplakia
