Basierend auf dem Roman des französischen Journalisten und Schriftstellers Gaston Leroux gilt das Musical "Das Phantom der Oper" als das erfolgreichste aller Zeiten. Am Broadway in New York läuft es seit Januar 1988 ununterbrochen und seit Dezember 2013 wird es erneut in Hamburg aufgeführt.

Der Künstler Thomas Schöne hat Eric, das im Jahre 1877 in den Katakomben der Pariser Oper hausende Phantom, in einer Skulptur verewigt, die das ganze Drama dieser gepeinigten Kreatur ausdrückt. Schöne hat die grausamen Entstellungen des monströsen Wesens künstlerisch sublimiert. Haltung, Gesichtsausdruck und Gestik künden von der inneren Zerrissenheit des Phantoms, das mit seinem Wissen der Menschheit doch auf so vielen Gebieten von Nutzen sein könnte.
