Researcher Observation
Whilst critical analysis was regarded as a central part of reflection,
there were indications of its limits in making sense of experience.
Helena was an interesting ‘lone voice’ amongst students; expressing
the view that sometimes it was not possible to rationalize the way a
situation went the way it did. Alison (teacher) echoed this, by
emphasizing that critical analysis did not always help her to find the
‘nub’ of what was bothering her about an experience. As an
experienced educationalist she used other strategies such as concept
maps or pictures to stimulate thoughts and feelings. These lone voices
challenge the influence of Western philosophical thought on how
people make sense of the world through rationality and reason, and
therefore current methods of pedagogy in professional education.
