Zika virus (ZIKV), an emerging arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family, is
transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Its name comes from the Zika Forest of Uganda where the virus was first isolated in 1947. Before the emergence of ZIKV in the Americas, the largest documented outbreak was in French Polynesia in 2013–14 Prior to December 2015, the
largest outbreak, which began in Brazil, had a preliminary estimate of
440,000 to 1.3 million cases
