However, more than 50 per cent of married women do actually go out to
work, and many others help in a family business, or take piecework into the
home. The role of the grandparents is still strong with regard to child care,
and women who do go out to work are often able to draw on this resource,
at least for part-time aid. It may be seen as a reciprocal benefit for the
shared or close living quarters, although many young mothers in cities
too report that they would prefer to stay at home with their children work with highly educated
mothers who do not return to work after giving birth would seem to suggest
that if the resources are there it has even become an option of preference.
Other women take a period off while their children are very small, and then
accept a part-time job so that they can return home in time to collect their
children from their day nurseries, or be there when they come in from
school
