Chaucer viveu em tempos turbulentos. Existiram três
reis durante sua vida: Edward III, que se tornou menos popular entre todos; Richard II que
foi assassinado durante o reinado; e Henry IV.
Houve uma longa e contínua guerra contra a França naqueles tempos, e sempre
muita discordância entre o rei inglês e o Papa. Foi o tempo da “peste negra”, que dizimou
milhares, pobres e ricos, religiosos e agnósticos. A religião era grande aliada e tinha grande
força de persuasão às pessoas. Muitas pessoas acreditavam que tamanho desatino era um
castigo de Deus, e sob a ótica de poetas da época “Deus estava surdo”.
