3.2. Information/Explanation Based

The second categorization focuses on activities that are information/explanation based. These refer to activities such as the following: when students are given instructions on certain topic or exercises and then are required to execute these instructions based on previous explanation or elaboration in classes. For example, in the geography classes – I observed Joe explaining to his students how to identify characteristics of terrains, hills, etc. After his explanations and sometimes working through an example, students would then work on the exercises in the text book, and apply what they have learnt by understanding concepts, following instructions as well as using the information acquired and applying them. This categorization differs from the discussion based one, because there is some form of a guide to follow in spite of having to indulge in some thinking and conceptualising. This however is not purely translating or executing instructions step by step like the next categorization of tasks which are instruction/action based.
