เทศกาลหิมะเริ่มตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1950 โดยเด็กมัธยมชาวญี่ปุ่นได้ช่วยกันปั้นหิมะจนกลายเป็นประติมากรรมสุดยิ่งใหญ่ที่สวนโอโดะริจนผู้คนให้ความสนใจอย่างมากและมันก็กลายเป็นเทศกาลอันน่าสนใจในเวลาต่อมา แต่ทว่าเทศกาลดังกล่าวก็ได้ถูกระงับไปพักหนึ่งในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง แต่หลังจากสงครามสิ้นสุดก็พบว่าเหล่าทหารและประชาชนได้ร่วมกันปั้นและแกะสลักหิมะให้เป็นรูปร่างต่าง ๆ อย่างสนุกสนานและเพิ่มความอลังการมากขึ้นด้วยขนาดและรูปร่างที่สวยงาม และมันก็กลับมาเป็นเทศกาลสุดรื่นเริงอีกครั้งกระทั่งทุกวันนี้
