Contact with Christians in other countries, the import of Bibles and the public celebration of Christmas are banned in Brunei. Anglican and Roman Catholic churches are the only recognised Christian communities, and their activities are restricted. Unregistered churches are considered 'illegal sects' and monitored or closed. Christian converts from Islam have to operate underground. Since 2011, Islamic law has been fully implemented for all Muslims to regulate civil affairs, and is now being extended to cover criminal offences, too. This will mean fines for failure to attend Friday prayers, corporal punishment for theft and capital punishment for adultery.
