One sculpture that sticks with me is a marble security camera. To me, marble represents authority, veneration, and religion. Traditionally, marble sculptures depict classical gods and goddesses, or Saints and Biblical heros; they represent cultural heritage and our highest cultural achievements. Security cameras represent spying, privacy breeches, hidden authority, and security. By venerating security cameras with all of the connotations of marble, Ai Weiwei elegantly asserts that the highest cultural achievement and the cultural heritage of the Communist Party is spying. Not art, diplomacy, science, humanitarianism, but spying.
