ทราบกันโดยทั่วไปว่า ประสาทสัมผัสของเรารับรู้ได้ 5 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ รูป รส กลิ่น เสียง และสัมผัส (ส่วนใครที่ศึกษาพุทธศาสนา อาจจะเพิ่มว่ามี ใจ เรียกว่า ธรรมารมณ์ รวมเป็น 6 อย่าง) โดยแต่ละลักษณะจะใช้อวัยวะแตกต่างกันไป เช่น ตาเห็นรูป ส่วนลิ้นก็รับรส เป็นต้น

แต่เชื่อไหมว่า มีคนพิเศษในโลกนี้จำนวนหนึ่งซึ่งมีประสบการณ์ต่างจากคนส่วนใหญ่ เช่น บางคนมองตัวเลข (หรือตัวหนังสือ) จะเห็นเป็นสี บางคนฟังเสียงดนตรี จะรู้สึกเหมือนมีอะไรมาสัมผัสผิวหนัง ส่วนอีกคน ลิ้นชิมรสปั๊บ กลับเห็นรูปร่างตามมาด้วย!

ประสบการณ์แปลกๆ แบบนี้ ฝรั่งรู้จักมานานราว 300 ปี แล้ว และเรียกว่า ซินเนสทีเซีย (synesthesia หรือ synaesthesia) ซึ่งมาจากภาษากรีกคือ คำว่า syn (ร่วม) + aisthesis (การรับรู้) หมายความว่า ประสาทสัมผัสตั้งแต่ 2 อย่างขึ้นไป รับรู้พร้อมกันนั่นเอง

ส่วนคนที่มีประสบการณแบบนี้เรียกว่า ซินเนสทีต (synesthete) ซึ่ง (ผมว่า) ฟังแล้วแหม่งๆ จึงขอเรียกว่าคนที่เป็นซินเนสทีเซียก็แล้วกัน
