Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) war einer der wichtigsten Großmeister des Jugendstils. Nach ersten Schritten als Autodidakt studierte er in München und Wien, von wo es ihn schließlich nach Paris zog. Dort entwickelte er seinen typischen Stil voller Symbole, zarter Farben und dekorativer Elemente, die er mit Vorliebe um feenhafte junge Frauen mit langen, wallenden Haaren rankte. Mucha wurde aufgrund seiner Vielseitigkeit mit Aufträgen geradezu überschüttet und galt bald als einer der Hauptvertreter der Art Nouveau.
