Death and suffering are systematically kept behind closed doors today. In the age of the
consumer society, shaped by cosmetic surgery, biogenetics and the obsession with youth, traces
of time and infirmity are marginalised. All the more do they make a shocking appearance in
television reports on poverty-stricken and war-torn zones. To escape this voyeurism and yet to
let the body and the perfectly cast material speak directly and downright physically: this is one
of the outstanding qualities of the works of Berlinde De Bruyckere. The Flemish artist belongs to
those contemporary sculptors unafraid of confronting the human figure.
