The delay in implementing the law is stoking resentment among labour groups, not least because lawmakers have recently approved an increase in public-sector wages. Parliament voted on November 12th to increase the salaries of civil servants, soldiers and lawmakers from April 2015. As the government continues its efforts to collect data, labour interest groups are likely to continue to cite the study on the minimum wage issue conducted by the Myanmar Trade Union Federation in July 2013, which has been disregarded by the Ministry of Labour. The study suggested that the minimum wage rate should be fixed at Kt7,000 (roughly US$7) per day. According to local media, general and skilled labourers earn just under Kt2,000 and Kt5,000, respectively, per day.
