A B S T R A C TEthnopharmacological and ethnobotanical approaches are described in the literatureas efficient to identify plants of interest for phytochemical and pharmacologicalstudies. In the present work, we reflect on the quality of the data collected in ethnodirectedstudies. In accordance to the problems identified in published studies, andtheir theoretical and methodological underpinnings, we believe that these studies arepoorly suited to contribute to the advancement of research aimed at the developmentof novel drugs.
