Other kind of written work can develop from the exercise, when the pupils are ready for them. For instance, variations in a simple story may be made and the addition of some descriptive details. If this is successful, the variations made by the pupils can be increased until sufficient practice in filing out a story or in re-telling stories have been given. This should lead on naturally and easily to story-telling, which need careful preliminary training before the full task is attempted. Thus the gradual transition to more difficult work is planned, and so the lower pupils don’t find the later work so much to them.
